Seize the Grey won the 149th Preakness Stakes in Baltimore at Pimlico Race Course dashing any hopes of a triple crown winner in 2024. This horse trained by D Wayne Lucas dominated the race denying Mystik Dan the opportunity to be a hero after his Kentucky Derby defeat.
Preakness Played Out in the Mud
The eight-horse field faced challenging conditions after a continuous rain over the day turned this track into a quagmire. Nonetheless, Seize the Gray started well and led at the start gate despite all odds. With resolve, it kept in front throughout in the splashing mud even though its odds were 9-1.
As they thundered down the stretch, Mystik Dan made a bold move to reel in the frontrunner. But Seize the Grey had just enough left in the tank, holding off the Derby champ by 2 1/4 lengths in an impressive 1:56.82 performance.
Catching Freedom finished third, followed by Tuscan Gold, Just Steel, Uncle Heavy, Imagination, and Mugatu. The regally-bred Muth was a late scratch due to a fever.
